Prune your plants to improve air circulation, and don’t plant your tomato plants too close together. Promote good drainage and prevent pooling of surface water around your plants. If you can keep the surface of the soil dry, you have a good chance of preventing the sclerotia from germinating. Plant in fresh soil to lessen the risk of possible infection. If you grow your tomato plants in containers, sterilize the pots before using them again. Options include a solution of 10 percent bleach, 70 percent rubbing alcohol, or an activated oxygen product called BioSafe Disease Control that is available from Arbico Organics. Make sure your gardening tools are clean! If that’s not possible, consider planting in containers or raised beds, using fresh soil. Note that the sclerotia can survive deep in the soil for up to 10 years. Rotate your crops and avoid planting in soil known to be contaminated with this pathogen for at least five years. What’s the most important factor in terms of cultural control in this case? Location, location, location, as they say. Given the wide host range of this pathogen, it is particularly important to double down on removing any weeds found in or near your garden. When conditions are favorable, it is a good idea to inspect your plants periodically and remove and destroy any that show symptoms of this disease. Unfortunately, no resistant varieties of tomatoes are available currently, though genetic testing of resistance to this pathogen is underway. There are some techniques you can use to minimize infection of your plants. Water can spread spores or sclerotia, and irrigation water is a common source of infection in commercial fields. The wind can also blow soil or crop debris infested with sclerotia into your garden. If successful, the fungus will then produce sclerotia, which can spread the disease further in your garden. The most common way that timber rot is spread is by spores that blow through the air from infected crops or weeds, and land on your unfortunate plants. How Your Garden Can Become Infested with Timber Rot However, you are stuck with those sclerotia in the soil – a harbinger of doom for your tomato plants. The only good thing about this disease is that once it has completed its disease cycle, it will not produce spores until the next year when favorable conditions return. Once the pathogen has become established in decaying tissue, it moves on to attack the healthy parts of plants. This is often the case in leaf axils where a flower blossom has fallen and become stuck. The spores typically germinate on susceptible tissue such as dead flowers. These can survive on a leaf for up to two weeks under favorable conditions. The fruiting bodies produce spores right above the soil line that are very sticky. You may be able to see these – they look like little mushrooms on the surface of the soil. Once conditions are cool and favorable for the fungus, the sclerotia within the top inch or two of soil germinate and produce fruiting bodies. If the environment is warm and dry, the sclerotia can stay in the soil for years – as infectious as ever. The plants are most susceptible when they are blooming, so pay particular attention to the flowers if the weather is cool and wet. Spores are most likely to infect tomato plants after 16-72 hours of continuous wetness with a relative humidity that is greater than 90 percent. Nighttime temperatures around 60☏ are particularly favorable for infection. White mold is a disease of cool, wet weather – temperatures from 59 to 70☏. If you cut the sclerotia open, their insides are pinkish-white. The tissues become even more bleached and brittle, and in seven to 10 days, the black sclerotia are formed. The fruit can also be infected, turn gray, and rot.Īs the disease progresses, the plant will wilt. It then spreads to the flowers, petioles, leaves, and stems. Next, a white fuzzy mold grows both inside and outside the plant. At first, the disease manifests as watery soft rots and bleached areas on the leaf axils and stems. The first sign of infection by this pathogen is at the base of the main stem at the soil line or on lower branches. This symptom in tomatoes gives the disease its alternate name, timber rot. You can find them inside tomato tissue that has turned white and dry due to the disease. The sclerotia form in or on dead plant tissue. These survival structures look like rat droppings – small, black, hard, cylindrical objects. How Your Garden Can Become Infested with Timber RotĪ classic symptom of this disease is the production of structures called sclerotia that give the organism its scientific name. Once you have selected a location, click the yellow spawn button at the middle-right of the screen. Listening to your squad or watching the map in order to choose the best respawn point is crucial. Also, be warned that some spawn locations can be overrun by the enemy if they are discovered. Each of those will have a different respawn timer when you die, with the Mobile and FOB spawns having a longer one than the main base. There can be up to 4 different spawn types Main base spawn, Mobile Spawn Point, Forward Operating Base and Regroup Call spawn. These appear as yellow flags with a ring around them. Once that's done, you can finally select a spawn location directly on the map. You'll be equipped with the gear going alongside the role you just picked (you will have a detailed image of your equipment when you click on the role). There will be another tab just right of the section one, click it and the panel of roles will appear where you will be able to pick a role and its loadout, with the shaded roles meaning that the role has already been taken (or too many specialists roles have been taken). Once you have joined a squad you can select a loadout. You won't be able to create a squad by yourself and have access to all equipment options. The options you have in roles and equipment depend on the squad you join and the number of players in that squad. For further information on each role, check the gear page where all the sections and roles are explained. Once you have selected a team, you should click on the Squad tab and join one of the squads with a free slot or create a new squad by clicking the "create" button. When picking a section, you will be presented with a screen showing the map of the battlefield with a set of tabs in the top left. There were numerous reports of suicides and murders and rapes as the situation spun out of control. Often the same bed was used by three different patients over the course as a day, as they were forced to sleep in shifts. Over the years it became more and more crowded to the point that by the early 1950s it housed an estimated 2,600 patients-more than ten times its official capacity. The building was originally designed to house about 250 mental patients. The procedure was so common at the asylum that during a single two-week period in the early 1950s, one doctor performed 228 icepick lobotomies. In some cases it was thought to calm down the patient, but in almost all cases, it rendered the patient drooling and permanently brain-damaged. Walter Freeman, known as the “father of the lobotomy.” This involved shoving an icepick through a patient’s orbital socket into their brain. Most notorious of all, though, was the “icepick lobotomy” pioneered by and performed by Dr. Once confined, inmates were subject to an array of abuse and torture. Some of the actual reasons that people were confined to the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum include: In fact, people would receive money simply for dropping off potential patients, no questions asked. In the mid-1800s, it was very easy for an angry husband or spiteful family members to get someone committed to a mental institution. Instead, patients entered a world of darkness. The wings of the hospital are long, airy, and designed to provide ample light. “Moral” treatment for the mentally ill that involved barbaric tortures and icepick lobotomiesĪccording to its designers, the asylum was originally built according to the “Kirkbride Plan” of the mid-1800s. Once you understand that, you’ll understand why it’s haunted. To understand why, one must first understand the psychiatric “treatment” that patients received here, because it was anything but therapeutic. Its walls are two and a half feet thick, designed to muffle the screams of people in mental agony.ĭue to the endless reports of paranormal activity within its thick, soundproofed walls, many consider it to be the world’s most haunted building. It sits on 666 acres and, except for the Kremlin in Moscow, it is the largest building constructed of hand-crafted stone masonry in the world. The Trans-Allegheny lunatic asylum is a stunning testament to Gothic and Tudor Revival architecture. After finally reopening as a tourist spot that hosted ghost tours, it readopted its original name, the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. In the early 1900s it changed its name to Weston State Hospital. After West Virginia seceded from Virginia in the midst of the Civil War, it was renamed the West Virginia Hospital for the Insane. The building itself, perched on a river across from downtown Weston, WV, was originally called the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. After being taken to a safer area, shipmates tried to resuscitate him several times, but he succumbed to his wounds. “The person that I probably knew best was Electronics Technician Chief Petty Officer Richard Costelow,” said Cotherman.Ĭostelow was in the Chief’s Mess during the time of the bombing and was severely injured in the blast. On the day of the bombing many of the chief petty officers were injured, resulting in a loss of highly experienced personnel on the ship and guidance to junior Sailors. “Our power configuration was very limited to what we could do so we had to rig casualty power cables from the stern of the ship.” “We didn’t have any power forward,” said Cotherman. This caused a ruptured sea water pipe in the forward power conversion room, a space which distributes electrical power throughout the front half of the ship. The attack created a 40-by-60-foot hole that tore into the ship’s hull. “Despite tragedy, despite chaos, Sailors will fall back on what they have been trained to do,” said Cotherman. He attributed their ability to keep the ship afloat to the crew’s damage control training. Despite uncertainties of what may come next, Cole’s crew withstood 96 hours of sustained damage control efforts, preventing further flooding and damage. Immediately following the blast, crew members rushed to rescue severely injured and trapped shipmates. He recalled going outside to the weather deck with a shipmate to find Chief Gunner’s Mate Norman Larson on the bridge wing with an M-14 rifle, yelling at them to “get back inside the skin of the ship!” “It’s amazing to me how clear that memory is,” said Cotherman. He was working in combat systems maintenance central, located on the port side of the ship, one deck above the galley where his shipmates were lining up for lunch when the bomb exploded.
